We used our 1/4 trowel and applied it onto the wall at a 45 degree angle and placed our Custom edge trim firmly into it by using a level. Since we were starting on the second row up we had to start with a half of a tile. We used a tile scorer for some of the easier larger cuts, but it was definitely necessary for us to use a wet saw for many of the intricate cuts. We watched this video for how to cut the tile. My friend said her tiler, who is very experienced said never buy tile from big box stores, even if it’s the same brand because Home Depot only carries seconds.

Looking back, we probably could’ve just used 1/16th and it would’ve been sufficient. First we shut off the power to the kitchen outlets and pulled out all of the wall outlets. When you tile you need to make cuts around them and it’s easier if the outlets are out of the way completely. We decided to start a row above and used a PVC Custom edging for a ledger to rest the tiles on.
If you are always concerned with the cheapest, people like us will not be around. No showrooms to see the products, no service after the sale, and lower quaity products being made. When your products do fail, who are you going to call to help you figure out what part you need?
It's been up for 8 years and I shudder to think how seldom I clean it and it looks great. While tile can look cold, the matte has a bit of a softer look. Plan for Extra Time
Don't know if this will help in your Matte or Shiny decision but we have Dal tile matte arctic white in our main bathroom and as a backsplash in our kitchen. My reason for going with matte was I felt it wouldn't show water spots as much. It's in our shower and doesn't show spots at all. We have really soft water where I live though so maybe the shiny wouldn't show spots either. Our house was built in 1938 and we feel the tile looks age appropriate in the house.
