The San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center (SFWMPAC) is located in San Francisco, California. It is one of the largest performing arts centers in the United States. It covers 7.5 acres (3 hectares) in the Civic Center Historic District, and totals 7,500 seats among its venues.

The upper floors of the Veterans Building housed the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (formerly the San Francisco Museum of Art) from 1935 to 1994. In 1980 the new Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall opened, on a site on Van Ness across the sidestreet from the Opera House, as part of the SFWMPAC complex. For events and/or performances outside of the War Memorial Opera House, SF Ballet will update patrons on COVID protocols via email and here on the Safety page. Today, after seismic retrofitting following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the Opera House boasts state-of-the-art equipment, a refurbished interior graced with exquisite fixtures and furnishings, several elegant eateries, and refreshment bars located throughout the house. Finding a dancer’s perfect fit is a science and an art, where safety and comfort are key and the result stays true to the designer’s vision. The War Memorial Opera House is a short walk from the Civic Center BART and MUNI stations as well as the Van Ness MUNI station. Bear in mind that parking in the Civic Center area can be limited, especially during performances.

At the same time, the nearby Zellerbach Rehearsal Hall, with a stage the same size as that of the Opera House, was opened as part of the complex which included the Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall. Get to the area early to make sure you give yourself ample time to park and get to the Opera House.
