Subway Tile

There were a lot of skinny little pieces my husband needed to cut for underneath the cabinets and around the window which added extra time because sometimes they would break while cutting. If you like subway tile but are looking for something a little different, you might like these subway tile alternatives for your kitchen backsplash or bathroom wall. Classic ceramic subway tile is one of the most affordable types of tile per square foot.

We don’t own every power tool on the planet and after reading the instructions, my husband had to make a trip to the store for a hacksaw and aluminum file.

Lying northeast of Yafo, Tel Aviv is built over three low ridges of soft sandstone hills that run almost parallel to the coastline. A narrow belt of small sand dunes covering the westernmost of these ridges expands inland where gaps in the relief occur. More sandstone ridges lie to the east, and the suburban, built-up area now spreads beyond them into the rich agricultural land of the coastal plain. The Yarqon River bounds the central part of Tel Aviv to the north. A portion of the Tel Aviv–Yafo municipality extends east of the Ayalon, and a larger part extends north of the Yarqon River.

The only grouting my husband had previously done was for our guest bathroom tile floor. The tiles were 12×24 and therefore didn’t require much grout. We knew this project would be different and we’d need more and also more time. We watched a few different YouTube videos about grouting which were helpful.

Decide Where you Want the Tile to End

Spacers are always a good idea when installing tile of any type. They ensure you get a proper grout joint that is even and allows for structural movement without disrupting your tile. Subway tile has been a staple since 1904 when designers La Farge and Heins used it in the New York City subway in an effort to create pristine, bright stations. Tel Aviv has a typical Mediterranean climate with distinct summer and winter seasons and less distinct intermediate seasons. The weather is mild, with no major natural hazards. The long summers are warm and humid and are without rain.

Personally I would never work with box store material. I choose to support actual professional tile stores as do many others. Then we checked our counters to make sure they were level. Our longest section where the sink is was level. However, the two cabinets on either side of the range were slightly off. If we started on the left side and went level across it would just barely hit the granite on the other side instead of sitting on top with a bit of space. I favor the specialty store b/c the product options are so much more varied so you won’t see your backsplash in your neighbor’s home.

I do know that certain mfrs make a HD/Lowe’s version and it is inferior. The box store demands that they make “X” at this cost or else they won’t carry that line in the stores. Mfrs who want the exposure then cut whatever corners they need accordingly.

These Daltile subway tiles come with a slight edge around to create a 1/16 of a grout joint without adding additional spacers. We wanted this size, so it made for quicker and easier tiling. The first application of the glazed ceramic 3 x 6 white tile was in the subway stations beneath New York City in 1904. We used our 1/4 trowel and applied it onto the wall at a 45 degree angle and placed our Custom edge trim firmly into it by using a level. Since we were starting on the second row up we had to start with a half of a tile. I was planning on buying 3”x6” standard subway tile Daltile from Home Depot. My friend said her tiler, who is very experienced said never buy tile from big box stores, even if it’s the same brand because Home Depot only carries seconds.

Looking back, we probably could’ve just used 1/16th and it would’ve been sufficient. First we shut off the power to the kitchen outlets and pulled out all of the wall outlets. When you tile you need to make cuts around them and it’s easier if the outlets are out of the way completely. We decided to start a row above and used a PVC Custom edging for a ledger to rest the tiles on.

Are you a dog owner who loves kayaking? If so, you may be wondering how to safely kayak with your furry friend. Kayaking with your dog can be a fun and rewarding experience, but it's important to take certain precautions to ensure both you and your dog have a great time on the water.

One of the main concerns when it comes to kayaking with your dog is safety. Dogs can easily become scared or anxious when introduced to new environments, so it's important to take the time to properly train and acclimate your dog to the kayak before hitting the water.

To safely kayak with your dog, start by introducing them to the kayak on land. Allow them to sniff and explore the kayak while you provide positive reinforcement. Once your dog is comfortable with the kayak on land, you can slowly introduce them to the water. Start in shallow, calm water and gradually move to deeper water as your dog becomes more comfortable.

When kayaking with your dog, it's important to have the right equipment. Make sure your dog has a properly fitting life jacket that is designed for canine use. This will ensure that your dog remains buoyant and visible in the water. Additionally, it's a good idea to have a leash or tether to keep your dog secure in the kayak.

Personal Experience

Last summer, I decided to take my dog, Max, kayaking for the first time. I started by introducing him to the kayak in our backyard. I let him sniff and explore the kayak at his own pace, rewarding him with treats and praise. After a few sessions, Max was comfortable climbing into the kayak and sitting calmly.

Once Max was comfortable with the kayak on land, I took him to a calm lake for his first on-water experience. I started in shallow water and allowed Max to get used to the feeling of being in the kayak. As he grew more comfortable, I slowly paddled out into deeper water. Max was a natural in the kayak and seemed to enjoy the experience.

When kayaking with Max, I always made sure he was wearing his life jacket and had a secure leash attached to the kayak. This allowed me to keep him close and ensure his safety. I also brought along plenty of treats and water to keep him hydrated and rewarded him for good behavior.

Look for a kayak that is stable and has enough space for both you and your dog to sit comfortably. Additionally, consider the weight capacity of the kayak to ensure it can safely support both you and your dog.

History and Myth

The history of kayaking with dogs dates back centuries. Inuit people in the Arctic used kayaks as a means of transportation and often brought their dogs along for hunting trips. These dogs were trained to sit calmly in the kayak and even assist in navigating through icy waters.

There are also myths and legends surrounding kayaking with dogs. Some believe that dogs have a natural affinity for the water and are excellent swimmers. Others believe that dogs have a sixth sense when it comes to navigating the water and can help guide their human companions to safety.
